Say what you want about Project X (and people have), but there’s a decent idea behind it. Indeed, given how boringly repetitive teen movies have become, having a house party filmed in found footage-style – imagine American Pie shot like The Blair Witch Project – is one of the few ways to put a fresh spin on the genre. But as three high school seniors watch the party they’ve organised spiral dangerously out of control, the end product misses the opportunity to do anything with such a promising premise. While The Inbetweeners Movie proved that teen movies could blend crude laughs with real heart, this Todd Phillips-produced effort is both unfunny and empty. It’s not quite deserving of the huge amount of scathing, one-star reviews being afforded its way, but overall this doesn’t shake the genre up like it might have.
